Axle Logistics More Than Doubles Goal

Knoxville Company Continues Unprecedented Growth, Expects More

KNOXVILLE, May 13, 2024 – Axle Logistics hit a milestone in April as its number of employees exceeded 600.

“We’ve been blessed with a great group of people and are grateful to be on this trajectory of growth,” said Axle co-founder Drew Johnson.

To give some perspective, when Axle won a PILOT (Payment In Lieu Of Taxes) from Knoxville and Knox County in 2020 to help finance their headquarters, the agreement included a pledge from the firm to create 263 jobs in 5 years. Now, in just four years they have more than doubled that number.

“Our new building, now under construction next door to our existing headquarters, will enable us to eventually have some 1200 employees,” said co-founder Jon Clay. “With average pay of $117,000 a year that’s a big economic factor for our community.”

“When local government and the private sector collaborate, good things happen,” said Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon. “Four years ago, when negotiating a tax assistance package, Axle Logistics promised to create 266 jobs within five years. Now, a year ahead of schedule, Axle Logistics has hired more than twice that number of employees, has invested $40 million here and is adding a second 85,000-square-foot headquarters building in North Knoxville.”

“Axle Logistics is the kind of company we want to see in Knox County. It’s homegrown, it creates great jobs, it uses technology to help succeed,” said Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs. “Kudos to Axle for already outperforming what they promised to do.”

Axle Logistics is a growing Knoxville company with a focus on providing safe, reliable, advanced logistics services. That includes truckload, less than truckload (LTL), intermodal, and warehousing to customers throughout the continental U.S., Canada and Mexico.

Axle has been repeatedly named to the Inc. 5000 Fastest Growing Companies list and has been recognized as both a Top Workplace and a Top Freight Brokerage firm.

The company is virtually always expanding and looking for people who are drawn to an entrepreneurial culture, a work hard/play hard environment, are tech-savvy, and appreciate autonomy. “We want to see people win”, expressed Johnson. “Our goal has always been to be a platform and conduit for positive outcomes.”

The current headquarters at 835 North Central is a more than 100-year-old converted car dealership. The company quickly outgrew the space and is now building a new building next door. The 85,000 square feet structure represents an additional investment of some $38 million.

The new headquarters project is being managed by Conversion Properties, was designed by Design Innovation Architects and is being built by Merit Construction.
