Turning Challenges into Customers: Maddax Winston-Evans’ Internship Journey

August 1, 2025

For Maddax Winston-Evans, interning as a Logistics Consultant at Axle Logistics has been more than just a résumé booster—it’s become a defining chapter in his career exploration. Immersed in a fast-paced, performance-driven environment, he’s learning not only what it takes to thrive in logistics but also gaining clarity on his future path.

Why Axle?

Maddax’s decision to join Axle was guided by trusted recommendations.

“I had some older friends who interned here and worked part-time throughout the year,” he explains. “They always spoke highly of the company—the amenities, the people, and the job itself. Since it’s based in Knoxville, where I live, it just made sense.”

After a strong interview with Hunter Duncan, Maddax accepted the offer without hesitation. That decision marked the beginning of a summer filled with growth, learning, and meaningful wins.

From First Calls to First Wins

Like many new interns, Maddax’s first customer didn’t come easy—but the experience proved invaluable.

“I was working with my team lead at the time, Zach Serrano. We were making sales calls and blitzes together. I had researched a company and decided to reach out,” he recalls. “The contact didn’t use email—he required everything to be faxed.”

Unfamiliar with faxing, Maddax took it as a challenge.

“I spent about three days learning how to do it properly. Eventually, I got it done and landed the customer,” he says. “That win gave me momentum and built my confidence early on.”

Growth Through Guidance

Now working under team leader Vandrele Sammons, Maddax continues to build on that early success.

“You hear ‘no’ a lot in sales,” he says. “But something I learned in Launchpad training stuck with me: It’s not your name on the side of the truck. That mindset helps me stay focused and not take things personally.”

He credits much of his development to the support of his team leads and the company’s culture of continuous learning.

“Put your head down and work hard,” he advises. “Things won’t always go your way, but if you’re consistent, there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel.”

A Team Lead’s Perspective

Vandrele quickly recognized Maddax’s drive and dedication.

“Maddax came in ready to learn,” he shares. “He’s coachable, driven, and asks the right questions. He’s been able to help cover loads, improve his sales approach, and manage customer relationships with growing confidence.”

What impressed him most?

“He already had a customer before joining my pod. That initiative—and the ability to keep that momentum going—is what makes him a strong asset to the team.”

Looking Ahead

Although the internship is still in progress, Maddax already feels a renewed sense of direction.

“This experience has confirmed that I want to pursue a career in sales, and it’s also opened my eyes to opportunities in the broader supply chain space,” he says.

When asked to sum up his time at Axle in one word, he doesn’t hesitate:

“Rewarding.”
