BLOG: How will the 2020 Hurricane Season Effect Trucking?

With hurricane season in full affect, many wonder how it will impact the trucking market. Hurricanes have a terrible way of not only impacting the lives of those in its path, but it is extremely impactful to where and when capacity shifts, causing supply chains to adjust throughout the country. The Climate Prediction Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released that this season is expected to have stronger storms than average. “This is one of the most active seasonal forecasts that NOAA has produced in its 22-year history of hurricane outlooks” expressed the NOAA’s lead seasonal hurricane forecaster Gerry Bell to DAT.

Because of the anticipation of a more volatile season coupled with an already impacted market due to COVID-19, shippers are fearful of an increase in lack of capacity. Already, markets are fragmented from capacity being allocated for essential items and a steep uptick in household goods and medical supplies. A tumultuous hurricane season, which in turn requires additional capacity focusing on emergency equipment and supplies, will only exacerbate the current state.

Relationships and communication are key now more than ever between transportation providers, shippers and manufactures. According to Freightwaves, truckload volumes are 30% higher than this time last year, showing at least 75% of current freight on the road is from current maritime imports. This is only going to exacerbate the current market as hurricanes begin to make landfall over the course of the season disrupting capacity once again.
